ChatLink enables linking items, enchants, spells, talents and quests in private chat channels. ChatLink by default will not work in public channels such as General or Trade to avoid undue spam. Also, note that other people will need this addon to see your links in chat channels correctly.
Limitations / Bugs
ChatLink has been localized for English, French and German versions of WoW, but may not work with other languages. If you'd like to help with localization, please post a reply below.
Updated for 2.4.0 patch. Added spell, talent and quest linking support.
Installation Guide
- Exit "World of Warcraft" completely
- Download the mod you want to install
- Make a folder on your desktop called "My Mods"
- Save the .zip/.rar files to this folder.
- If, when you try to download the file, it automatically "opens" it... you need to RIGHT click on the link and "save as..." or "Save Target As".
- Extract the file - commonly known as 'unzipping'
Do this ONE FILE AT A TIME!
- Windows
- Windows XP a built in ZIP extractor. Double click on the file to open it, inside should be the file or folders needed. Copy these outside to the "My Mods" folder.
- WinRAR: Right click the file, select "Extract Here"
- WinZip: You MUST make sure the option to "Use Folder Names" is CHECKED or it will just extract the files and not make the proper folders how the Authors designed
- Mac Users
- StuffitExpander: Double click the archive to extract it to a folder in the current directory.
- Verify your WoW Installation Path
That is where you are running WoW from and THAT is where you need to install your mods.
- Move to the Addon folder
- Open your World of Warcraft folder. (default is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\)
- Go into the "Interface" folder.
- Go into the "AddOns" folder.
- In a new window, open the "My Mods" folder.
- The "My Mods" folder should have the "Addonname" folder in it.
- Move the "Addonname" folder into the "AddOns" folder
- Start World of Warcraft
- Make sure AddOns are installed
- At the Character Select screen, look in lower left corner for the "addons" button.
- If button is there: make sure all the mods you installed are listed and make sure "load out of date addons" is checked.
- If the button is NOT there: means you did not install the addons properly. Look at the above screenshots. Try repeating the steps or getting someone who knows more about computers than you do to help.
Translations
When you download a mod, please be sure that the mod is compatible with your translation of wow. Some mods only work on the US versions, while some only work on some of the various European versions. These variations are called "Localizations".
TOC Numbers (Out of Date Mods)
When Blizzard patches WoW, they change the Interface number. This means that all mods will be "out of date" unless or until the author releases a new version for that interface. Some people go into the .toc files and update the numbers themselves, but this is STRONGLY advised against as it will cause problems locating possible incompatibilities addons. When you log into WoW after a patch, you DO NOT have to delete your interface directory. All you have to do is simply tell WoW to ignore the interface numbers and load all the mods anyway. All you have to do is, while at the "character select" screen, look in the lower left corner and click on the "addons" button. A window will pop up listing all your installed mods.
If you look in the upper left corner of that window there should be a box that says "Load Out of Date AddOns". You want to CHECK this box. Now simply go into WoW normally and all your mods should load. As of the 1.9 patch, you will have to do this after EVERY patch/update that Blizzard posts! If you encounter any problems with a mod after a patch, please be sure to let the author of the mod know so they can fix it.

Mac Support
WoW addons are not platformed based. As such, they can be used on either Mac or PC. You can extract both .zip and .rar files on a Mac using StuffitExpander.

raggmopp saidNice addon, however, there seems to be some kind of a conflict with other addons (which ones, I haven't figured out yet) where items won't link. I'm still trying to drill down on this, but it doesn't affect my ability to see others' links in chat, just my ability to send a proper link. This occurs with every type of item when it doesn't work...it appears to be from toon to toon.

Yrys saidWell, I'm actually feeling slightly motivated and I'm working on adding in a few (minor) features. For one, I'm trying to detect different 'chat link' style addons, to avoid incompatibilities. I've also been looking at adding support for decoding links from different addons, but so far I've only seen one alternate style (Cirk's), and it doesn't seem to have been updated since BC's link data changes.
Does anyone know of any addons of this type aside from ChatBox, ChatMod, Chatmanager, or Prat?
Thanks!

Katasha saidThere does appear to be a conflict with linking when someone has GuildAds installed. Not sure if it's because they have something built in to let you link in that channel or not. But you asked for Addons and that could be one :)

Yrys saidKrellmax, paparas69: can you give me a specific item or enchant name with which linking fails?
Thanks!

paparas69 saidI had the same errors too because I am using ChatMod. With an update to rev. 101 of ChatMod all errors went away so I would advise all to update!

Krellmax saidI have tested with a friend with both ChatLink and ChatMOD and they both have a problem with linking items. I've had both of us using just ChatLink and sometimes linking fails. I've had both of us using just ChatMOD and sometimes linking fails. So right now I use both but turn off ChatMOD's linking. Do you have any idea why linking is failing? Has anyone else seen this problem?

Yrys saidSorry for the slow replies, I guess Curse doesn't notify on comments after the site upgrade.
Golconda: Are these errors still occurring? If so, can you please post the exact error messages?
Linkitch: Are you using any other programs which modify chat text?
mooklepticon: ChatMod probably uses a different way to encode links (though I guess it must read ChatLink links at least). I'll put this on my to-do list and see if I can decode ChatMod links and warn if it's also installed.

mooklepticon saidThere's a bug with Chatmod and Chatlink. Chatmod seems to have its own Chatlink style thing linked in. It works one way, but not the other.
If I link an Item, a chatmod user can see it. If a chatmod user links and item, I get the code spam. If a Chatmod user has Chatlink as well, it gets funky.

Linkitch saidI have quite a weird bug, when ever I link an item it gets linked with alot of extra text. Eg. Silithid claw would get linked like this [H[Silithid Claw][Silithid Claw]

Golconda saidIT seems that there are continual bugs caught by bug sack. Something happens and creates an error that is somehow caused by chatlink when CTRaid is activated by joining a raid or a group.
Any thoughts?

Btw, do you know why they removed it from the very begginging?

Yrys saidRophy: Sorry, looks like enchant linking support isn't going to be added (at least by me) for a while. My account is inactive.
sibbor: I believe it was to reduce spam on public channels (which is why I filter those out).

I'll try to get another version out with backward compatibility soon.
